The bilateral conference CITC 2006 organized by India China Economic & Cultural Council in Mumbai at the Nehru Centre in Worli was held on schedule on the 27th, 28th and the 29th April 2006. Sixty-two Chinese and over 200 delegates attended and participated in the proceedings. The Conference was covered by the media and complete Audio Visual Records are available. |

CITC 2006 was formally inaugurated by H.E. the Governor of Maharashtra, Mr. S. M. Krishna and Mr. Song Deheng, the Consul General of China in Mumbai delivered his address as the Chief Guest of the function.

The conference began in a somber mood, starting appropriately by playing the National Anthems of China and India.

The inaugural proceedings were ably conducted by Mr. S. A. Joshi, Member ICEC Council. He read out an important Message sent to the President of ICEC Council by Hon. Mr. Shyam Saran, Secretary, Ministry of External Affairs, and the Government of India. Mr. Saran highlighted the need for such interaction and thanked ICEC Council for taking the lead to organize CITC 2006 especially during the current year of India China Friendship.

Dr. Abid Hussain, Chairman, ICEC Council delivered the Welcome Address in his usual warm and engaging way welcoming the distinguished personalities on the Dias and in the auditorium as well as the visiting delegates and guests from China and India. He remarked that no power on earth can come in the way of India’s Friendship with China. People to People contact and the astute leadership will build the foundation of an enduring relationship. |
Mr. Song Deheng, the Consul General of the People’s Republic of China, our Chief Guest, was the next speaker. In his frank address Mr. Song highlighted the fast growth in our bilateral trade and expressed the need for India to make it easier for China to work in India. He also complained about maximum number of anti-dumping duties on Chinese goods by India. He touched upon other operational difficulties faced by the Chinese businessmen in India. ICEC Council would convey his observation to the Government of India. |
H.E. Shri S. M. Krishna, The Governor of the State of Maharashtra spoke of his association with China and his visit to several provinces just before he took over as the Governor. He too alluded to the line of friendship between the two countries. He mentioned of Panchasheel, the five principles of Coexistence signed in 1954 by the Prime Ministers of India and China; Mr. Jawaharlal Nehru and Mr. Chou-En Lai. He also stated that the long cultural heritage and wisdom has helped both countries to overcome some strain on our relationship experienced during the past. He too pointed out the need for greater civic society interaction for better understanding and larger trade. |
Mr. Wang Jinzhen, Vice Chairman, China Council for International Trade, China gave full background of our bilateral economic relationship with facts and figures and high-lighted the potential for growth. |
Mr. P. S. Deodhar, President, ICEC Council said that future of India China Trade Relationship will ride on the back of people to people contact. Our interaction, he said, should not be limited to trade but the two countries should also encourage tourism and ensure Electronic Media Coverage enabling better understanding and share values. |
Shri Suresh Sharma, Executive vice President of ICEC Council briefly but effectively summed up the proceedings and expressed his appreciation of the visiting delegates visiting us from a far away China and wished them good and fruitful time here. |
Shri Mohammed Saqib, The Secretary General, ICEC Council, gave the vote of thanks with special mention of the Guests on the Dias and the delegates from China. |
